    Wacker Dr. Viaduct Reconstruction

The Wacker Dr. Viaduct reconstruction project was one of the highest profile City project since Millennium Park. The final viaduct phase of this project was over $300M of local, state, and federally funded monies. Due to the major disruptions in downtown vehicular and pedestrian traffic, this project had a very aggressive completion schedule. From the time of the mechanical award, we had 13 months to submit, coordinate, procure, build, and test all the mechanical systems. This project was in full compliance with the “Buy America Act.” All equipment, materials, and hardware was melted, milled, and manufactured in the USA.

These systems included 14 enormous, high temperature, reversible, vane axial fans installed in 10 ventilation rooms from State St. to Adams St. on lower Wacker Drive. All fans assemblies included huge discharge and intake sound attenuators. The intake sound attenuation was built into steel frame intake walls at each location. These fans will operate at low speeds to continuously ventilate Lower Wacker. They will also respond to CO2, NO, and smoke sensors throughout the site to maintain high levels of air quality. This project also included the ventilation, heating, and air conditioning of 16 miscellaneous electric and bridge rooms throughout the site.

The 14 fans designed to ventilate and/or evacuate Lower Wacker Dr. have a total horsepower of 2625. Mechanically, this project was meticulously planned and coordinated for 8 months and then built in 8 weeks!
